Associate Directors
BOARD COMPOSITION
The Board of Directors of the Alliance shall be composed of nine (9) members with one (1) Director being elected from each of the four (4) state districts, created by dividing the State into quarters consisting of twenty-three (23) counties each, and five (5) Directors at-large. Directors shall serve staggered, three-year terms with three (3) Directors elected at each Annual Meeting. Terms shall be based on calendar years, commencing on January 1 following the election. Only managers, certified operators and/or wastewater operators, or those actively involved with the overall operation and management of the member water and/or wastewater utilities may serve on the Board of Directors. No more than one (1) person from the same active member system may serve on the Board of Directors at the same time.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties of the Board of Directors are as follows:
- To conduct and supervise the affairs of the Alliance, including the designation of committees to examine specific problems and report their findings to the Board.
- Take charge of the property of the Alliance.
- To supervise the keeping of systematic records of the Alliance’s finances and property, the progress of the plans and programs of the Alliance, and the proceedings of the Alliance.
- To initiate, supervise and approve plans and programs designed to achieve the objectives and purposes of the Alliance.
- To determine policies for the Alliance consistent with the objectives and purposes of the Alliance.
- To provide for the periodic audit of the financial affairs of the Alliance by a certified public accountant.
- To provide for the dissemination of information to the members and to the public generally as may be needed to provide suitable publicity for the work and status of the Alliance.
Directors should understand and commit to the following:
- Attend 80% or more of the Board of Directors meetings.
- Attend the Annual Membership meeting.
- Attend at least one Alliance conference each year, attending both if possible
- Attend at least one (1) NRWA Rural Water Rally each three-year term.
- Attend at least one (1) NRWA Annual Conference each three-year term.
BOARD MEMBER MEETING & TRAVEL OVERVIEW
- Approximately 7–8 Board Meetings are scheduled per year, including virtual and in-person meetings.
- Some meetings are held in conjunction with association events, while others may be scheduled virtually or at a central location when not tied to a specific event.
Key Events:
- Spring Conference: March – French Lick, IN
- Fall Conference & Annual Membership Meeting: October – Fort Wayne, IN
- NRWA Rural Water Rally: February – Washington, D.C.
- NRWA WaterPro Conference: September – rotates location annually
Board Member Training: NRWA offers an in-person Board Training, which is recommended at least once per 3-year term.
Travel Reimbursement: Board members are reimbursed for hotel, transportation, and required meeting expenses per the Association’s Travel Reimbursement Policy.
