Course Description:
This course provides water and wastewater operators with essential knowledge and safety practices for working in confined spaces and excavations. Attendees will gain a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements, workplace hazards, and safe work procedures to protect themselves and their teams in high-risk environments.

Confined Space Training:
Participants will be introduced to the methods used to identify confined spaces and the steps necessary to protect operators who must enter them. Topics include:

  • Definition of a confined space vs. a permit-required confined space

  • Categories of confined spaces and associated hazards

  • Importance and order of atmospheric testing

  • Ventilation requirements

  • Duties of each member of the confined space entry team

  • Required safety equipment and protective measures

Excavation Safety Training:
This portion of the course focuses on standardized construction practices based on OSHA standards for excavation safety. Attendees will learn to:

  • Recognize hazards and violations commonly found in excavation work

  • Conduct soil analysis through manual and visual testing methods

  • Select and properly use protective systems

  • Understand and apply key OSHA terms and definitions

  • Apply techniques for safely working with equipment in and around excavations

  • Solve common shoring dilemmas using practical safety solutions

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between confined spaces and permit-required confined spaces.

  • Implement proper testing, ventilation, and entry procedures for confined space safety.

  • Identify excavation hazards and apply OSHA-compliant protective systems.

  • Perform soil analysis and apply corrective measures to ensure safe excavation practices.

  • Safely operate and coordinate work involving excavation equipment.
