Course Description
This introductory course provides participants with a fundamental understanding of sanitary sewer smoke testing and its role in identifying defects within collection systems. The course combines classroom instruction with approximately three hours of hands-on field experience, where participants will assist in conducting a live smoke test. Attendees will participate in monitoring test areas, documenting observations, and learning industry best practices. The course concludes with a review of the documentation generated during the testing process, including how the information is interpreted and used to support maintenance, rehabilitation, and regulatory compliance.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the purpose and benefits of smoke testing within a sanitary sewer collection system.
- Describe the equipment, safety considerations, and procedures used during a smoke test.
- Assist with monitoring and documenting observations during a live smoke testing event.
- Identify common defects and conditions revealed through smoke testing.
- Interpret smoke testing documentation and understand how the results are used to support system maintenance, asset management, and infiltration/inflow (I/I) reduction efforts.
