Course Description

This session explores the connection between wastewater treatment plant discharges and their impact on downstream drinking water sources. Participants will learn how treated effluent can become a source water for public water systems and the importance of treatment processes used to remove remaining contaminants. The course will cover coagulation and flocculation as key treatment methods and conclude with an overview of disinfection practices, including chlorine, ultraviolet (UV), and ozone systems.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how wastewater treatment plant discharges can affect downstream drinking water sources
  • Identify contaminants of concern in treated wastewater effluent
  • Describe the purpose and basic operation of coagulation and flocculation processes
  • Compare common disinfection methods, including chlorine, UV, and ozone
  • Recognize the role of effective treatment and disinfection in protecting public health
