Class Description

This course provides a practical overview of phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment using both chemical and biological processes. Participants will review chemical precipitation, including commonly used chemicals, how they remove phosphorus, and appropriate application points within the treatment process. The course will also cover biological phosphorus removal using polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs), with emphasis on the role of anaerobic, anoxic, and aerobic conditions and the use of selectors to create the proper environment for phosphorus removal. Operational considerations, process adjustments, and troubleshooting techniques will also be discussed to help operators improve phosphorus removal and maintain consistent treatment performance.
