Course Description

This full-day course equips water and wastewater professionals with essential safety practices and practical digital tools to support both field operations and regulatory compliance.

The morning session focuses on confined space entry and excavation safety, covering hazard recognition, OSHA requirements, atmospheric testing, ventilation, protective systems, and safe entry procedures. Participants will also observe outdoor demonstrations of proper equipment setup and real-world safety applications.

The afternoon session introduces the Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) Viewer and the IDEM Virtual File Cabinet. Attendees will learn how to access compliance data, review sampling and violation history, and locate permits, inspection reports, and regulatory documents to support efficient operations and inspection readiness.

By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to perform work safely in the field while effectively using digital tools to support compliance and decision-making.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify confined space and excavation hazards and apply appropriate safety controls
  • Perform atmospheric testing and follow proper entry procedures, including use of PPE and required equipment
  • Understand OSHA requirements related to confined space entry and trench safety
  • Recognize protective systems and safe work practices for excavation and trenching operations
  • Navigate the Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS) Viewer to access system data, sampling results, and compliance history
  • Utilize the IDEM Virtual File Cabinet to locate permits, inspection reports, and regulatory documentation
  • Apply digital tools to improve recordkeeping, inspection readiness, and operational decision-making
