This full-day course provides water professionals with a comprehensive overview of surface water treatment processes and operations. Participants will explore both the scientific principles behind treatment and the practical aspects of operating and maintaining facilities.

Morning Session – Coagulation, Flocculation, and Clarification:
This session covers the key processes of coagulation, flocculation, and clarification, focusing on their application in both surface water and wastewater treatment. Participants will learn about detention times, equipment, and chemicals used in each process, as well as critical operational factors such as coagulant type and dosage, pH, alkalinity, temperature, mixing intensity, and suspended solids characteristics. The session also compares the use of metal salts with polymer coagulants (anionic and cationic), providing insight into optimizing treatment performance.

Afternoon Session – Surface Water Treatment Operations and Troubleshooting:
The afternoon session introduces the fundamentals of surface water treatment facility operations. Topics include routine and basic maintenance practices, process control strategies, and troubleshooting common operational challenges. Special emphasis will be placed on managing treatment processes during weather-related events, equipping attendees with practical tools to ensure reliable facility performance under changing conditions.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles and applications of coagulation, flocculation, and clarification.

  • Identify the impact of chemical, physical, and environmental factors on treatment effectiveness.

  • Apply best practices for routine operations and maintenance of surface water facilities.

  • Troubleshoot process issues and adapt operations during weather events.
