Course Description

Morning Session: Outfall to Intake

This session deals with the discharge from wastewater treatment plants and how it becomes a source of
water for drinking water systems. The types of treatment needed to remove some of the contaminants in
these discharges will be discussed, including Coagulation and Flocculation. The final hour, disinfection, will
be a topic and include chlorine, UV, and ozone disinfection processes.

Afternoon Session: Wellhead Phase II Updates

This two-hour session will provide an overview of source water protection and its role in protecting public drinking water supplies. Topics will include Indiana's Wellhead Protection Program, potential sources and pathways of contamination, watershed-based source water protection, and the connection between land use and water quality. The session will also highlight conservation practices, partnerships, and resources that utilities can use to reduce risks to drinking water sources and support source water protection efforts.

Morning Session:

• Explain how wastewater treatment plant discharges can become source water for downstream drinking water systems.
• Describe how coagulation and flocculation are used to remove contaminants during drinking water treatment.
• Compare chlorine, UV, and ozone disinfection processes and their roles in producing safe drinking water.

Afternoon Session:
