Course Description

This course provides a comprehensive overview of Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) rules and regulations as they relate to wastewater treatment operations and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit compliance. Participants will gain a clear understanding of environmental compliance requirements and the critical role accurate documentation plays in maintaining regulatory compliance.

The session will cover proper preparation, completion, and submission of required reports, including Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs), Monthly Report of Operations (MROs), and Monthly Monitoring Reports (MMRs). In addition, the course will outline the responsibilities of the Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC), with practical discussion on laboratory procedures, lift station operation, spill and overflow reporting, and day-to-day compliance obligations essential to protecting public health and the environment.

• Identify key IDEM rules and regulations governing wastewater treatment facilities.
• Explain NPDES permit requirements and how they apply to daily plant operations.
• Accurately prepare and submit DMR, MRO, and MMR reports in accordance with regulatory standards.
• Describe the environmental compliance responsibilities of the Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC).
• Apply proper laboratory procedures to ensure accurate sampling, testing, and documentation.
• Recognize reporting requirements for lift station issues, overflows, and other compliance events.
• Reduce compliance risks by implementing best practices for documentation, monitoring, and operational oversight.
