The Future of Water Starts Here: Apprenticeship Information Session - Online

Course Description:

Building and retaining a qualified workforce continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing water and wastewater utilities. This informational session is designed for utility managers, supervisors, HR professionals, and other employers interested in using apprenticeship as a workforce development tool. Participants will learn how the Water and Wastewater Apprenticeship Program combines structured classroom instruction with paid, on-the-job training to help utilities develop employees into knowledgeable, skilled, and certified operators. The session will explain how employers can participate, what is expected of the utility and apprentice, how training and on-the-job learning are documented, and the support available throughout the program. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how apprenticeship can help build a stronger workforce and a clear path for getting their utility involved.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

• Explain how the Water and Wastewater Apprenticeship Program can support utility workforce development and succession planning.
• Describe the structure of the apprenticeship, including related technical instruction and paid on-the-job learning.
• Identify employer responsibilities and expectations when sponsoring an apprentice.
• Understand the time, training, supervision, and documentation requirements associated with participation.
• Explain how apprenticeship can help develop employees toward operator certification and increased responsibility.
• Identify potential employees or new hires who may be good candidates for apprenticeship.
• Understand the steps required to enroll an employee and become a participating employer.
• Identify the resources and ongoing support available to employers throughout the apprenticeship process.
