Class Description

This course examines a variety of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants with an emphasis on process calculations, operational stability, and cost-effective treatment. Participants will review key unit process calculations and evaluate real-world plant conditions to identify operational challenges and corrective actions. Topics include activated sludge loading calculations, detention time, nutrient and pH adjustments, and aeration issues. The course will focus on using calculations and process observations to improve treatment performance, increase stability, and reduce operating costs.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Calculate activated sludge loading and apply the results to process control decisions.
• Calculate detention time for wastewater treatment unit processes.
• Evaluate nutrient and pH requirements and identify appropriate operational adjustments.
• Identify common aeration issues and corrective actions to improve treatment performance.
• Evaluate plant operating conditions and recommend corrective actions to improve stability and reduce costs.
