Course Description
Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) are a leading cause of collection system blockages, sanitary sewer overflows, and treatment plant operational challenges. This course provides an overview of pretreatment strategies used to prevent FOG from entering and congesting wastewater collection systems and treatment facilities. Participants will explore the framework of the National Pretreatment Program, the role of sewer use ordinances, and practical best management practices (BMPs) for controlling FOG at the source. Emphasis is placed on regulatory compliance, proactive enforcement, and effective coordination between utilities, regulators, and commercial users to protect system performance and public health.

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain how fats, oils, and grease impact wastewater collection systems and treatment plant operations
- Identify the key components and objectives of the National Pretreatment Program
- Describe the role of sewer use ordinances in managing and enforcing FOG control requirements
